More than 140 people took part in the first Suicide Awareness Walk organized by Randy Anderson, commander of Fairmount American Legion Post 106. The walk took place October 3 at Hankinson Veterans Memorial Park.
The Legion family came together for the event, with volunteers from the Fairmount, Lidgerwood and Hankinson posts and American Legion Riders leading the walk. Silent auction and raffle items helped raise money and keep attention on suicide awareness.
The day included lunch, a DJ, a bouncy house for children and numerous door prizes.
Among the honored guests were Karly Steinwehr, who lost her brother Korbin, and Sarah and Randy Bakken, who lost their son Samuel. Both families have lost loved ones who served in the military to suicide.
